High School Summer Programs

Do you have siblings, friends or peers interested in attending Westphal? Our Summer Programs are now enrolling High School students who want to get a head start on college studies. The Westphal College offers intensive summer programs in a variety of subjects: The Music Industry Program participants will get hands-on experience in our MAD Dragon recording studios and labs; Fashion Design and Design & Merchandising Program participants will visit design showrooms and boutiques throughout Philadelphia, and will be exposed to both hands-on and computer aided design (CAD) in our fashion studios; both the Interior Design and Architecture Programs will have students spending time in the studio and in the field doing research, investigations and building models; students interested in Cinema & Television will spend time with Drexel faculty learning to use the industry's best equipment, Graphic Design participants will build portfolio ready work with hands on-studio classes while learning the latest industry practices and, the Dance Summer Intensive will give participants the opportunity to explore the intersections of technique, creative process, and dance as a healing art, as well as about different career options for those who are passionate about dance.

Music Industry participants will learn how the music business operates, how artists are chosen and signed to a label, and about songwriting. They also have the opportunity to interact with industry guest speakers. The courses are taught by our Music Industry faculty and include Digital Audio Production, Music Business, Audio Engineering, Music Publishing, and workshops in Entrepreneurship.
Those interested in Fashion Design and Design & Merchandising Programs offers an immersive design curriculum allows students to explore design, illustration, product development and promotion of fashion and lifestyle brands. Guest speakers address career opportunities and trends for the 21st Century. Field trips are offered to Philadelphia retailers, museums, theaters and restaurants to round out the program.
Interior Design and Architecture Programs participants will develop their design skills while gaining a better understanding of freehand drawing and 3D modeling computer software. Working architects and interior designers will welcome students into their offices for tours and lectures and they will take advantage of Philadelphia’s architectural wealth with trips throughout the City. A collaborative charrette in which the students conceptualize, design, develop and construct a Portable Shelter made totally from found or leftover materials culminates with a final formal presentation.
Students in the Dance Summer Intensive will spend their days in technique classes, seminars, and choreographic explorations led by Drexel dance faculty with further choreographic mentorship by Drexel dance students. Participants will experience a variety technique classes and create choreography in our studios and the week will end with a culminating performance.
Students interested in Cinema & Television will explore cinematic storytelling learning how to make a film and gain an understanding of why particular technical and artistic choices are made. By focusing on shot composition, mise-en-scène, screen direction, and continuity, participants will understand visual storytelling in both the film and television industries.
In one-week, aspiring Graphic Designers can learn about the vast, creative world of visual communication. Students will have hands-on studio classes including projects and critiques leading to portfolio-ready work.
